STEP THIRTEEN
Constructing Jigs
First we must build a few jigs to insure straight foldsand proper placement of tabs and holes.
Construct a Bending Brake. Using scrap plywood and following this loose sketch, make a brake to any convenient dimensions...as long as the width of the arm and base are wider than the longest dimension you wish to bend. (In this case that’s 24”...so make your brake at least 30” wide. the rest of the measurements are arbitrary.
You may also want to drill a hole in the end of the clamping arm opposite the hinged end. Drill this hole straight down so that it goes completely throuh the clamping arm and into the base of the jig. Insert a finishing nail or dowel into this hole. Now when you bring the arm down it will be possible to attain the same alignment each time.
STEP FOURTEEN
Now you have to build the Hole Punch Jig. You'll need two scrap pieces of plywood about 1' square, a few strips of wood or masonite that are 1/4" x 1" x 12", and a couple of small hinges. Nail or screw the strips as indicated in the photo (they're the white strips). Carefully measure, mark and cut as indicated.
STEP FIFTEEN
Using any scrap masonite or thin plywood you happen to have handy, make one last jig. This one will help you place the notches in the desk that match up with the notches in the base. Place this over the 6" x 24" pieces of the desk assembly and trace and cut the notches in all 17 pieces. Set aside until assembly.
