It is with profound sadness that we report the passing of a great band member and friend, Mr. Ray Doyle along with another friend and former band member Alex Almasy. Our friends were returning home from the rehearsal of another band and were in a head on collision. According to the police, the accident happened April 10 2019 around 9:50 PM on Farrington Mill Road near Durham. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that the crash happened when a vehicle driven by Freddy Villatoro Martinez tried to pass another in a no-passing zone. That car side-swiped a truck and then collided head-on with Ray and Alex. Police said that Martinez, the driver of the car that was trying to pass illegally will face multiple charges.
Ray was a founding member of our band, a fine player and an even finer human being. To say that he will be sorely missed is a huge understatement. When the idea of starting a new band in North Carolina with a professional style organization, Ray was one of the first to support the idea and cheer us on.
In the tragic auto crash that took Ray from us, the Raleigh music community also lost Alex Almasy. Alex was an alumnus of our band and played most of the trumpet solos on our first recording. He was an outstanding musician and a really good guy. There is nothing like a big band "out chorus" with Alex "taking it home". Like Ray he will be greatly missed.
